Seminar Paper #4: Investigate Current Issues or Events

For those who do not know, I did my service learning hours with the Waynesburg University Biology club, by working on; and fixing up the Unity Trail on the campus of Waynesburg University. In case you don’t know the Unity Trail is located at the bottom of the hill and right across the street from Martian Hall, which is located on the Campus.

The trail was developed by the Waynesburg University sciences, and with partnership with EQT, in order to bring awareness to those who are unaware of the invasive species of animals, plants, and trees; to give a place for students who attend Waynesburg University a place to use as an outdoor science classroom to conduct experiments on the invasive trees and finally give a nature walking trail for the residence of Greene County to use. As we conducted our service we did many things, but mostly importantly we cleared the branches, trees and sticks from the walking path to give a clear marked walking path; we also laid mulch and leveled it out on the path to mark it and make it easier to walk on, and finally we added a new welcome sign on the entrance of the Unity Trail.

The first article that I found that relates to my service learning service project is the vison statement by the organization named “Habitat for Humanity”; that states “A world where everyone has a decent place to live; and seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope”. This vison statement and article set forth by “Habitat for Humanity” relates to my service site because the Unity Trail wants to give everyone a decent place observe nature and preserve the environment instead of giving everyone a decent place to live; but both organization agree that they want to better the world and help those within their area; by providing a place where residence can use and better the community and both organizations can work through God’s love and teach the community that they are working in about God’s mission.
The second article that I found and according the article written by Trista Thurston of the Observer-Reporter; it states that “The new Unity Trail on Waynesburg University’s campus offers calm respite in the heart of the borough. The trail’s start is down the hill from the end of East Wayne Street near Martin Hall on campus”. It also states that the Unity Trail was founded and led to the development by the assistant professor of biology, Janet Paladino that lead the trail project that which was dedicated at a ceremony Wednesday April 15th 2014 and its purpose is to take a nice, quiet walk, to appreciate what nature has to offer and to take their children and appreciate nature firsthand”.
In conclusion after reading the articles and thinking about my service site; that both nonprofit organizations both have the same concept in mind; that they both want to better the world and the community that they are involved in to make it a nicer community for the residence now and in the future.

Both organizations want to make impacts within their communities; by the Unity Trail wants a place to bring awareness to Greene County through nature and give the residence a nice walking trail; and the organization of Habitat for Humanity wants to give everyone a decent home; so they both want to better the world and both want to spread God’s love through their actions. That is why I believe that these two articles and non-profit organizations are so alike because they both have the same mission.
