Seminar Paper #2: Civic Impact

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the term “civic responsibility” is defined as the “responsibility of a citizen”. It is comprised of actions and attitudes associated with democratic governance and social participation. Civic responsibility can include participation in government, church, volunteers and memberships of voluntary associations. The definition of “civic responsibility” to me means that it is a voluntary option by an individual of a society and Civic responsibilities encompass an action; and the Civic duties or responsibilities may include and or for example, obeying the laws of the country, paying the taxes levied by the government, or serving on a jury or as a witness in court.

To be an effective citizen in the United States one must conform and respect the laws and guidelines of one’s community and country by being a legal United States citizen for one and another might be fallowing all the United States constitution and driving laws that this country has in place. Another way a person could be an effective citizen is fallowing the rules of private property owners like an amusement park or sporting venue and obeying the police. Lastly another way a citizen could be an effective member of a community is by freely volunteering time to those who are less fortunate or those in need.

Civic responsibility affects our society by people not fallowing the rules and laws, which cause verbal and physical fights to occur and violence to break out across our country in the wakes of mass killings, murders, thefts and rapes; witch results in members of the community being locked up jails and families being ripped apart from their loved ones because people of the community cannot grasp the concept of “civic responsibility”. Civic responsibility can affect our society by the citizens of the community wanting to what is right and fallow the laws to make our society a safer place in the future.

The role that each of us play in being engaged citizens is that each individual person has to hold up their end of the bargon. This mean each person in our society has to choose what’s right from wrong each and every single day in order to make our society a better place. If more people choose to fallow the concept of “civic responsibility” our society will be a much better place and our crime rate would go down and more citizens would be willing to help those other less fortunate citizens in need.

The choices that we make impact our community by every decision we make as ever human is a natural born leader weather they know it or not; and I say this because the decision of one person will influence the actions of another person. So if a person chooses the life of a crime, more people will choose crime and fall away from “civic responsibility”, but if more people choose to do good and fallow the laws then more people will respect the laws and fallow the meaning of civic responsibility so it’s our duty as citizens to lead through examples and choose the path of good and not evil to uphold and fallow the meaning of “civic responsibility”.

The connection between service learning and civic responsibility is that service learning is the concept of information of what you learned after you did an experience such as service or an event. In this case the service learning is what you learned and felt about yourself personally after you choose to do a good dead and fallowing the act of civic responsibility after I choose to volunteer my free time for this class and to help with the unity trail by cutting down trees and laying mulch to help the Waynesburg community.
